First of all, thanks for asking this question,I work it out and give you a simple answer.Cheratussin AC cough syrup, a combination of codeine and guaifenesin, is used to treat cough and to reduce chest congestion caused by upper respiratory infections or the common cold. Promethazine and codeine cough syrup contains promethazine hydrochloride 6.25 mg and codeine phosphate 10 mg, and is 7% alcohol. Cheratussin AC does not contain alcohol. Here I think it is for your reference and maybe not a correct answer or sometimes there are a variety of answers for the same question. So here are more information as below and it could be helpful.

About Cheratussin AC cough syrup:

Cheratussin AC syrup is codeine and guaifenesin. Codeine suppresses the cough and guaifenesin helps loosen mucus congestion. It contains the active ingredients codeine phosphate and uaifenesin.Take this medication exactly as it has been prescribed by your doctor. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended. Cough or cold medicine is usually taken only for a short time til your symptoms clear up etc.If you take more than 3 tablespoons of Cheratussin AC cough syrup in 6 hours, that is too much.Overdose symptoms of Cheratussin AC: extreme dizziness, vomiting, sweating, confusion, hallucinations, cold, blue-colored lips or fingernails, weak or limp muscles, pinpoint pupils, weak pulse, slow breathing, fainting, or seizures (convulsions).

About Promethazine and codeine cough syrup:

Promethazine/Codeine Syrup is a phenothiazine antihistamine and narcotic cough suppressant combination. You can only get this if your doctor prescribes it for you. It is used for treating cough, congestion, and other upper respiratory symptoms caused by allergies or the common cold.

What is the difference between promethazine vc syrup and promethazine dm syrup?

Promethazine is classified as an antihistamine, but is most commonly used in hospitals for nausea. Promethazine VC has codeine added to it and is used as cough syrup. Codeine is a narcotic used as pain killer, but also decreases coughing.
